Let’s get one thing straight: both Canada and Dubai UAE are incredible in their own ways. Dubai has its glitzy skyscrapers, desert safaris, and indoor ski slopes (because why not?). Canada, on the other hand, has maple syrup, moose, and enough natural beauty to make your Instagram feed look like a National Geographic cover.
But if you’re wondering why Canada might just edge out Dubai as the better place to live, visit, or even settle down. Having lived in Dubai for over 15 years, I’m excited to take you on a fun, slightly opinionated, and hopefully entertaining journey today!

Why Canada is Better Than Dubai (UAE): A lighthearted take on two amazing destinations and let’s discover why the Great White North’s nature, lifestyle, and charm outshine Dubai’s glitz.
1. Nature vs. Neon: The Great Outdoors Wins Every Time
Let’s start with the obvious: Canada is a nature lover’s paradise. Think about it—where else can you hike through lush forests, kayak in crystal-clear lakes, and spot a bear (from a safe distance, of course) all in one day? Canada’s landscapes are like a buffet of natural wonders.
You’ve got the Rocky Mountains, Niagara Falls, Banff National Park, and the Northern Lights. It’s like Mother Nature went all out and said, “Here, take this. You’re welcome.”
Now, don’t get me wrong—Dubai has its charms. The Burj Khalifa is jaw-dropping, and the Palm Jumeirah is an engineering marvel. But let’s be real: you can’t exactly go camping in the desert without worrying about sand getting into, well, everything. And while Dubai’s artificial islands are impressive, they don’t quite compare to the raw, untamed beauty of Canada’s wilderness.
2. Weather: Four Seasons vs. Four Words (Hot, Hotter, Hottest, and Sandstorm)
Ah, weather. This is where Canada and Dubai couldn’t be more different. Canada has four distinct seasons: spring, summer, fall, and winter. Each season brings its own charm—cherry blossoms in spring, sunny beach days in summer, colorful foliage in fall, and snowball fights in winter. It’s like living in four different countries without ever needing a passport.
Dubai, on the other hand, has one season: hot. Sure, it’s a dry heat (as if that makes it better), but let’s be honest—when it’s 45°C (113°F) outside, the only place you want to be is indoors, preferably next to an air conditioner. And don’t even get me started on sandstorms. Imagine planning a picnic and ending up with a sand sandwich. No, thank you.
3. Quality of Life: Chill Vibes vs. Fast Lanes
Canada is known for its laid-back, friendly vibe. Canadians are polite, welcoming, and always ready to apologize (even if it’s not their fault). The pace of life is slower, and there’s a strong emphasis on work-life balance. Want to take a day off to go skiing? No problem. Need to leave work early to catch your kid’s hockey game? Go for it.
Dubai, on the other hand, is all about the hustle. It’s a city that never sleeps, with a fast-paced lifestyle that can be both exciting and exhausting. While Dubai offers luxury and convenience, it can sometimes feel like you’re living in a pressure cooker. Plus, let’s not forget the infamous Dubai traffic. Sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic in 40°C heat? Yeah, no thanks.
4. Diversity and Inclusion: A Melting Pot vs. A Cultural Mosaic
Both Canada and Dubai are incredibly diverse, but in different ways. Canada is a cultural mosaic, where people from all over the world come together to celebrate their differences.
Whether it’s Diwali, Chinese New Year, or Canada Day, there’s always something to celebrate. Plus, Canada is known for its inclusivity and progressive values. Love is love, and everyone is welcome.
Dubai is also diverse, with expats making up a large portion of the population. However, the cultural experience in Dubai is more like a melting pot, where different cultures blend together but often lose their individual flavors. And while Dubai is relatively tolerant, it’s important to remember that it’s still a conservative society with strict laws. So, if you’re used to the freedom and openness of Canada, Dubai might feel a bit restrictive.
5. Cost of Living: Affordable vs. Astronomical
Let’s talk money. Canada is generally more affordable than Dubai, especially when it comes to housing and healthcare. Sure, cities like Toronto and Vancouver can be pricey, but compared to Dubai’s sky-high rents and luxury lifestyle, Canada feels like a bargain. Plus, Canada’s universal healthcare system means you don’t have to sell a kidney to pay for a doctor’s visit.
Dubai, on the other hand, is all about luxury—and that comes with a hefty price tag. From expensive cars to designer clothes, Dubai is a city where keeping up with the Joneses can quickly drain your bank account. And while Dubai offers tax-free income, the cost of living can easily offset that benefit.
As I mentioned above I have lived in Dubai, I have seen people living in extreme poverty, with 10 to 15 individuals sharing a single room. On the other hand, there are those who enjoy an extremely luxurious lifestyle in Dubai.
6. Education and Opportunities: Learning vs. Earning
Canada is home to some of the world’s top universities, offering high-quality education and plenty of opportunities for students. Whether you’re studying engineering at the University of Toronto or pursuing a degree in environmental science at the University of British Columbia, Canada has something for everyone. Plus, Canada’s strong economy and job market make it a great place to build a career.
Dubai also offers excellent educational institutions and job opportunities, especially in fields like finance, technology, and hospitality. However, the focus in Dubai is often more on earning than learning. It’s a city where ambition and networking can take you far, but it’s not always easy to find a work-life balance.
7. Safety and Stability: Peace of Mind vs. Glitz and Glamour
Canada is consistently ranked as one of the safest countries in the world. With low crime rates, political stability, and a strong sense of community, Canada offers peace of mind that’s hard to beat. Whether you’re walking home late at night or letting your kids play outside, you can rest easy knowing that you’re in a safe environment.
Dubai is also also very safe, with very low crime rates and strict laws, that’s why I love Dubai as I felt so much safer there on the streets. However, the political climate in the Middle East can be unpredictable, and the glitz and glamour of Dubai can sometimes feel like a facade. Plus, the strict laws in Dubai mean that you always have to be on your best behavior—no jaywalking, no public displays of affection, and definitely no drinking in public.
Also, many local Emirati people tend to perceive themselves as superior to Asians. I have witnessed significant discrimination, with Arabs often treating Indians, Bangladeshis, and Pakistanis poorly. This was the primary reason I decided to leave Dubai, UAE, as I cannot tolerate racism in any form.
8. Food: Poutine vs. Shawarma
Okay, let’s talk about food because, let’s be honest, this is important. Canada is a foodie’s dream, with a diverse culinary scene that reflects its multicultural population. From poutine (fries topped with cheese curds and gravy—don’t knock it till you try it) to butter tarts and Nanaimo bars, Canada has its own unique dishes. Plus, you can find everything from sushi to tacos to curry in Canadian cities.
I would say Dubai is also a food lover’s paradise, with a wide range of international cuisines and luxury dining experiences. But let’s be real—while shawarma and falafel are delicious, they can’t quite compete with the comfort food that Canada has to offer. And don’t even get me started on Tim Hortons. A double-double and a maple dip donut? Yes, please.
9. Humor and Culture: Politeness vs. Extravagance
Canadians are known for their sense of humor, which is often self-deprecating and rooted in humility. From comedians like Jim Carrey and Seth Rogen to shows like Schitt’s Creek, Canada has a knack for making people laugh. And let’s not forget the classic Canadian joke: “I’m not your buddy, friend!”
Dubai, on the other hand, is more about extravagance and luxury. While there’s plenty to admire about Dubai’s opulence, it can sometimes feel a bit over-the-top. I mean, do you really need a gold-plated Ferrari? (Okay, maybe you do, but still.)
10. My Final Thoughts: Why Canada Takes the Crown
At the end of the day, both Canada and Dubai UAE have their pros and cons. Dubai is a city of dreams, where anything seems possible. But Canada? Canada is a country of possibilities, where you can live a fulfilling, balanced, and happy life. Whether you’re drawn to Canada’s natural beauty, inclusive culture, or high quality of life, there’s no denying that Canada has a lot to offer.
As I mentioned above, 95% local Emirati people believe they are superior to Asians. I have witnessed significant discrimination, with Arabs often treating Indians, Bangladeshis, and Pakistanis poorly. This was one of the main reasons I decided to leave Dubai, UAE—I cannot tolerate racism in any form.
Now, living in Canada, I feel equal to any Canadian-born citizen. Here, I experience equality, freedom of speech, and an open social media environment. I can make WhatsApp calls anywhere without needing a VPN, unlike in Dubai, where such calls are restricted, and people must find ways to work around the ban. Additionally, in Dubai, speaking out against the Sheikhs or ruling parties is strictly forbidden, regardless of the circumstances.
Dubai UAE is undoubtedly a great place, but if freedom of speech is important to you, it might not be the ideal destination.
So, what do you think? Is Canada better than Dubai, or do you have a soft spot for the glitz and glamour of the UAE? Let me know in the comments below—I’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences!
